The Colts travelled to Newtownards for this 2nd round match in the NIBFA cup not knowing what to expect from Ards Rangers who play in the South Belfast league. Ards started the brighter and we were under pressure for the opening 5 or 6 minutes and were a bit fortunate not to go a goal down but we weathered the storm and soon got our own game going. Aaron Robinson opened the scoring on about 15 mins today after beating the Ards defender for pace on the left, he cut inside and placed his finish in the top corner 1 nil Carnmoney.

The Colts were well on top now and for a while it seemed like chance after chance. Philip Scott looked on top form today and was a menace for the Ards defence, and it was the “wee man” who scored twice to put the Colts into a 3 nil lead, one of Philips goals was a classic, a ball from midfield was played over the top he let it bounce once then volleyed it into the roof of the net from about 20 yards. Three nil up and looking comfortable we then got hit on the counter attack, a long ball sent the Ards striker away on a one on one and he placed his shot well in the bottom corner..

Half Time: Ards 1 – 3 Colts

We knew it would be backs to the wall for parts of the second half and so it proved but our defence coped well with anything Ards had to offer, Ben Zubier was solid and some of his tackling was superb, there were no more goals second half and I think both sides were maybe tiring a little on what was a very heavy pitch.

From the off the Colts took control of the game and within ten minutes or so had a commanding lead and they remained in control for the rest of the half which ended 5 nil, some super finishing from new signing Thabiso Madala and Philip Scott.

Our front men scored loads of goals today but the whole team deserve a lot of credit, the back four and midfield played some lovely football and created countless chances for our strikers who had a great day, Thabiso hit five, Philip banged home another hat-trick and Shea Ashe played up front for the last ten minutes and grabbed another two.

WELL PLAYED LADS, KEEP THE GOOD RUN GOING!

I can’t praise our boys enough for today’s performance, right from kick off Carnmoney were on top and playing some lovely football, some of the passing and moving in the first half was a treat to watch. All that said, Antrim Colts have a strong back four and it was difficult to break them down and when we did their big keeper looked on top form. Antrim are a good side and always looked a danger on the break and after all our pressure and chances we were hit on the counter attack, a long ball from the Antrim defence sent their big front man away on a one on one and he made no mistake.

Half time Carnmoney Colts 0 – 1 Antrim Colts

Our boys were told at half time to keep doing what they were doing and the goals would come and I’m glad to say none of the heads had dropped and we still looked well up for it second half. Philip Scott and Paddy Quinn have formed a great little partnership up front for Carnmoney and would put the fear of God into most defences with their pace and trickery and they grabbed a goal each in the second half to put the Colts into a deserved lead 2 – 1 Carnmoney. Antrim had a few chances to pull level but big Josh Ritchie in nets had other ideas and pulled of a couple of brilliant saves, I have to say one save in particular was world class, a well struck shot looked destined for the top corner but Josh at full stretch managed to get fingertips to it and tip it past the post! There was great performances all over the pitch today from our boys and I could go on all day talking about everyone but the missus is telling me to hurry up I have to go Christmas shopping!!! Anyway the ref had the hard task of picking man of the match and I think he was spot on giving it to Dean Lewis in the right back position, some of his tackling and just the way he read the game today was top notch.

Also we want to welcome new signing Thabiso Madlala and welcome back to the club Louis Maylin, who both played well when they came on today.

Carnmoney were on top for the first ten minutes and some of the passing and moving was top notch, we created 4 or 5 good chances but the Rovers keeper was on top form and kept us out.

Then it was Antrim who took control for the next ten minutes and they played some nice football and a good run and cross from the right was caught sweet on the half volley by the rovers front man and the ball sailed into the top corner, 1-0 Antrim.

Back came the colts and it was that man Philip Scott again who put us back on terms at the break.

Half time: Carnmoney Colts 1 – 1 Antrim Rovers

The Colts looked the more likely team in the second half and Paddy finished after a good run from Philip, then Philip put the game beyond doubt with about ten left on the clock 3-1.

The whole Colts team played very well today but I thought the two in the middle of the park, Gerard and Ryan were outstanding. I lost count of how many times Gerard won the ball back for the team and Ryan’s first touch and passing was a treat to watch. The ref gave man of the match to the Antrim keeper today which tells its own story. Well done again lads!

back on top form today and banged home ten against Cavehill, Paddy Quinn opened the scoring with a great little run and neat finish on what was to be a great day for the Colts front man, he went on to torture the Cavehill defence and grabbed five goals!

Our other front man Phillip Scott could have hit five as well but was happy with another hat trick which gets him a fiver, he’s going to be rich by the end of the season at this rate!! Shea Ashe who has been outstanding on right wing for the last couple of games scored a brace today which brought today’s goal tally to ten, but it wasn’t the score line that impressed the manager and coaches today it was some of the neat football the Colts played and the hard work the boys put in that kept us happy. Well done lads!

The Colts good run of results continued today with another win. The two big Apex centre halfs were winning the battle in the air against our front men in the first 20 mins or so but Carnmoney soon caught on to this and started to play it on the deck to our two speedy strikers and its hard to match Philip and Shea for pace, and it was Phil who scored twice before the break. Half time; Carnmoney 2 Apex 0

Half time: Carnmoney Colts 2 – 0 Apex

Our boys played some nice football at the start of the second half and it wasn’t long before they stretched their lead another goal and another hat-trick from Philip, followed soon after by a good strike from Shea into the roof of the net, 4 0 Colts, time to relax and enjoy the rest of the game, or so we thought, I’m not sure if we took our foot off the pedal or Apex went up a few gears or maybe a bit of both but it went 4 1, 4 2, 4 3, in the space of about 15 minutes and the remainder of the match was squeaky bum time as they say! The Colts managed to hang on and another 3 points are more than welcome.

Big Josh deserves a special mention this week, he pulled off a couple of worldies today in nets, great game big man!

Paddy Quinn put the colts ahead after good early pressure but FDC seemed to move up a gear after going behind and created a couple of good chances and it wasn’t long before they scored a deserved equaliser, it got even worse for the colts when the FDC front man then put them 2-1 up. Then just before the break Charlie Taylor played a great ball to Philip Scott and he tucked his chance away and it was honours even at half time.

FDC have a couple of big lads and our boys found them a handful to deal with from set pieces and it was from a corner they went 3-2 up not long into the second half.New signing Ryan McAuley came on at the start of the second half and definitely gave the colts the lift they needed and after neat control and great vision he played a lovely weighted ball over the top for the lightening fast Philip Scott to run on to and again the “wee man” buried his chance to put the colts back on level terms.Aaron Robinson then made a great run into the box but as he was heading toward goal he was clipped on the ankle by an FDC defender and the ref had no hesitation pointing to the spot, Philip stepped up to take it and made no mistake putting the colts 4-3 up and it turned out to be the winner.Well done lads it wasn’t a pretty game today but again our effort and commitment was very good.Josh Ritchie pulled off a couple of great saves today and Dean Lewis had another good game at right back and Ryan looks like another great addition to the team and also well done to Phil on another hat trick but the ref gave the hard working Gerard McDonnell man of the match today.

The Colts came up against a much improved, well organised Whitehead today and both teams worked hard in what was a very even first half. There were a few half chances either way but both sets of defences and both goalkeepers looked on top form and the half ended goalless.

Carnmoney had to chase the game now and they were on top for the last 20 minutes, the two front men Shae and Phil were put through a few times but the Whitehead keeper was having a great game and kept them out, a couple of free kicks from Aaron Robinson bounced right in front of the keeper but he was equal to them as well, Philip then fizzed one off the crossbar and I think the bar is still shaking! Then in the dying embers a ball over the top from midfield was well controlled by Philip and the ‘wee man’ left the defence behind and this time gave the keeper no chance, the Carnmoney line went crazy and the ref blew the full time whistle.

Credit to both sides today for a very entertaining game and I think overall a draw was the right result.

Gerard McDonnell is often the unsung hero in our team and in tight matches like today you need a hard working, hard tackling, holding midfielder and I thought he played that roll brilliantly today, his work rate was top notch.
